A first-timer's guide to the Ganga Aarti
9 October 2026 · 3 min read
The evening Ganga Aarti is one of the most memorable things to do in Rishikesh: lamps, chanting and bhajans, with the river as the backdrop. It is easy to enjoy once you know a few basics.
Where it happens
Several ghats hold an evening aarti. Triveni Ghat and the ghat at Parmarth Niketan are the two best known, and each has its own feel. Triveni tends to be larger and busier, while the one at Parmarth Niketan is often described as more intimate.
When to arrive
The aarti is held in the evening around sunset, so the time shifts through the year. Aim to arrive 30 to 45 minutes early to get a comfortable spot on the steps, and check the time on the day.
A few tips
- Dress modestly and be ready to take your shoes off near the steps.
- Keep phones and valuables secure, as it can get crowded.
- Bring a light layer in winter, since it gets cool by the river after dark.
- You may float a small leaf lamp (diya) on the river if you wish. Please do not litter.
- Be respectful when taking photos, and avoid blocking others' view.
